The definition of narrative

A narrative is a type of spoken or written text that tells a story of one character or more who face certain situations.It commonly gives a moral value to the readers or listeners.A narrative is a story. We use narrative writing when we want to tell a friend about something interesting that happened to you at work or in school, when you tell someone a joke, or if you write about the events of the day in the privacy of a diary or journal.

According to Parera, narrative is one of the forms of developing writing, for example characters told the history of something based on the development of writing from time to time.  Meanwhile, Keraf had an opinion that the narrative was a form of composition, which had the main objectives.  In the form of activities that were tied together to become an event that happened in a certain time.

The purpose of narrative

The purpose of narrative is to entertain the readers or the listeners with an imaginary story. The examples of Narrative text such as myth, short story, tale, novel, fable, legend, etc

The generic structure of narrative

The most important characteristic of narrative text is marked by conflictand resolution.

The form is:

Orientation     : It is about the opening paragraph where the characters of the story are introduced.

Complication: Where the problems in the story developed.

Resolution       : Where the problems in the story solved.

The language features of narrative

Use action verbs

Action verbs are verbs that show the performance of an action. They are dynamic verbs that show something happening. Example: walk, run, take, go, jump, swim, etc,.

Use of temporal conjunctions

Temporal conjuction is a type of word that is used to connect words or groups of words and it related in time.Example: after, as soon as, before, finally,since, while,  etc.

Use past tense

The simple past indicates that an activity or  situation began and ended at a particular time in the past.

The example of narrative text

The Legend of Nyi Roro Kidul

(The Queen of South Ocean)

Once upon a time[‘1] , there was a beautiful princess named Kadita. Because of her beauty she was called Dewi Srengenge. It meant the goddess of sun. Her father was King Munding Wangi. [‘2]

Although he had a beautiful daughter, he was unhappy because he always expected to have a son.he king decided to marry Dewi Mutiara. He had a son from her. Dewi Mutiara wanted her son to become a king in the future. She asked[‘3]  the King to send [‘4] his daughter away. The king did not agree.Dewi Mutiara called a black wizard to curse[‘5]  Kadita. She wanted Kadita’s beautiful body full of ulcer. Then,[‘6]  Kadita’s body was full of ulcer. It smelled bad. The beautiful princess cried.

The King was sad. No one could cure[‘7]  his daughter’s illness. The king did not want her daughter to be a rumor so he sent her away.
The poor princess did not know[‘9]  where to go. However, she had a noble heart. She did not have any bad feeling about her step mother. She walked[’10]  for almost seven days and seven nights. Then[’11] , she came[’12]  to the south Ocean. The ocean was so clean and clear. She jumped[’13]  into the water and swam.

Suddenly,[’14]  there was a miracle. The ocean water cured her illness. She became more beautiful than before. She also had a power to command the whole South Ocean. Finally[’15]  she became a fairy called Nyi Roro Kidul or The Queen of South Ocean.[’16]
